Cometdocs is an online free online file convertor tool which allows its users to convert files to various formats on the fly. The service began back in 2009, but over the time the team behind Cometdocs has worked hard and now offers more free services, including document sharing, transfers and storage. The idea behind Cometdocs is to provide one platform from where the users can manage all their file conversion needs. The company claims that the data shared with the service is completely secure and it won’t be shared with anyone else.
There are a couple of ways to use this service. Apart from accessing the service directly by going to their web app, or installing the newly launched Google Chrome Extension, you can also download their Windows Application, or Mobile Application.
For the purpose of trying out this service, we used their web app. The service is very easy to use. You upload a file from your computer using the upload button or just drag and drop the file. The file will get uploaded on their server. Once done you will have the option to select the type of conversion. After making this selection, it will require you to enter your email address. Once the file is ready after conversion, you will get an email with a link which will be valid for 24 hours. The website says that the transfer link should be valid for 3 days for free users, but unfortunately the email says otherwise. “Link will be valid for 24 hours, after which all data will be deleted from our servers.”
There are certain limits and restrictions which apply on the free users. For example, you can’t upload more than one file for conversion. You will have to remove the previous one before you can upload the next. Similarly, PDF to OCR requires Premium Account. We tried doing one and got the following message in the email.
“Converting this PDF requires OCR to successfully complete the conversion and retrieve the text. This feature is exclusively available to our Cometdocs Premium Users”
