I recently had to reset my SMC as a solution to continue fan noise and overheating problem even when using basic applications like Chrome.
- Quit all applications which are running. If some applications are stuck and you are unable to quite them then press Command + Option + Escape to force quit any application that is not responding.
- Put your Mac to sleep by going to the Apple menu and then select Sleep. Wake the computer after it has gone to sleep.
- Restart your Mac by click Apple Menu and then selecting Restart.
- Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple Menu from the upper-left menu bar and then selecting Shut Down.
See if this resolves your issue. If this doesn’t resolve your issue do the following.
- Shut down your Mac by choosing the Apple Menu from the upper-left menu bar and then selecting Shut Down.
- Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting if already not connected.
- Press (left-side) Shift + Control + Option keys and the power button at the same time for 20 seconds.
- Release all keys and then press power button at the same time.
- You might see the status change on your MagSafe change from orange to green. This is a maybe, as some people have experienced no change in status.
After you have done so, the computer will get switched on. There is no way to check if SMC reset has taken place. Doing so has resolved my issue of over heating.
