Those of you who have already upgraded or are planning to upgrade to the latest iOS 5.0 version can now jailbreak as well, allowing you to customize your iOS device the way it was meant to be!
The iPhone Dev-Team has released a tether-jailbreak that will work with your iOS device*. You can use Redsn0w 0.9.9b5 on your Mac or Windows PC by simply following this tutorial.
*This is incompatible with iPad 2 and iPhone 4S
A tethered jailbreak requires you to boot up your device via Redsn0w each time you power up your device
What you will need
iTunes 10.5: Available here.
Redsn0w 0.9.9b6: Available via these link: PC & MAC
The appropriate iOS IPSW for your device
- iPhone 4 (GSM)
- iPhone 4 (CDMA)
- iPhone 3GS
- iPad
- iPod Touch 3G
- iPod Touch 4G
Note: People using Gevy Sim or Ultrasn0w should try the alternative methods via sn0wbreeze 2.8b8.
Remember to backup your data.
Step 1. Upgrade your iOS device to 5.0 via iTunes 10.5
If you don”t want to download IPSW file again, you can just restore using the IPSW you just downloaded.
For Windows, use Shift Restore & select your IPSW
For MAC, use Option key Restore & select your IPSW
Step 2. Close iTunes 10.5 and open Redsn0w.
Select “Extras” > “Select IPSW”. Choose your previously downloaded IPSW here.
Go Back to the main screen and select Jailbreak.
Follow the on-screen instructions to jailbreak your device.
Step 3. Booting up
Now, for reasons unknown, the device will be jailbroken but the Cydia app will not work. Don”t Worry! This is perfectly normal.
Open up Redsn0w. Select “Extras” > “Just Boot” and follow the on-screen instructions.
F.A.Q.
Why should I jailbreak?
Apple does make considerable improvements with every iOS update but there are some areas that it does not touch. Our personal favorite, SBSettings is a free Cydia only app which brings control of commonly used features to your notification bar.
Should I wait for a untethered jailbreak?
You can always switch to an untethered jailbreak when it becomes available.
What happens if my iOS device powers down?
Each time your iOS device powers down, you will have to perform Step 3 to boot it.
