Make Chrome your default browser on iOS

By now you’ve already head that Google released Chrome for iOS last week. Having used it excessively over the weekend, I find that there is one problem everyone will face: Safari is still the default browser! Not only that, but Apple doesn’t allow users to change the default browser in iOS. Regardless, there is way around that.

The Jailbreak Method.

If you have a jailbroken iOS device, simply search and download ‘Browser Changer’ on Cydia. Once you respring your device. A new extension will appear in the Settings app by the same name. Just select ‘Chrome’ as your browser of choice (or any other if you’re so inclined) and you’re done. Bye bye Safari!

The Non-Jailbreak Method.

I’m sad to report that there is no way of changing the default browser setting on a non-jailbroken iOS device, but we have the next best thing. You can create a bookmark to open the viewed tab on Chrome. Just tap on ‘New bookmark’ in Safari and paste the following:

javascript:location.href=”googlechrome”+location.href.substring(4);

Save it as ‘Open in Chrome’ and you’re done. Now you can copy tabs from Safari to Chrome just by a click on this bookmark. Obviously the non-jailbreak method leaves much to desired but Apple simply does not allow fora user to change the default browser in iOS. Is this the tweak which gets you to jailbreak your iPad, iPod Touch or iPhone?
